The battle

4th DOOR

The Battle is an eternal theme in puppet theatre, both in popular and high culture. There is nothing the audience enjoys more than to see two puppets bashing each other with sticks, or to witness a fight between opposites – the two faces of a single person, the two hands of the puppeteer. The reason is simple: opposites exist, and disputes are obvious and inevitable, but to be able to see them embodied by wooden dolls or the leather figures of shadow theatre distances the drama, and the battle becomes a motive for uproar and fun or for reflection. The catharsis of fights in puppet theatre offered a form of liberation for audiences on the street, who could project their own poverty and unhappiness, resentment, anger and disputes, and laugh at them from a distance.
