Figures of devotion

6th DOOR

The iconic force of the figure awakens an intense feeling of devotion. Figures represent human passions, failings, fears, vitality and struggles and, therefore, have very often been identified with the same things that religion uses in its aim to offer security. Saints, Virgins and Crucifixes have been objects of cult in our Mediterranean culture just as the figures of pagan divinities were, previously. Exvotos, those objects of devotional attunement, are also an expression of hope or of thanks for a cure considered miraculous.

Today, puppets help to demystify such icons’ power without negating it. Elements of the modern individual’s internal makeup are projected onto them, and in this way allow inner spaces of perception to be amplified.
