INTENSIVE WORKSHOP ON PUPPET ANIMATION FOR CAMERA, by Manuel Román (from Muñecos Animados)

A fully practical workshop in which we will explore the basic principles of working with puppets in front of the camera. All the concepts covered are applicable to other types of puppets and various staging approaches.

Manuel Román has been dedicated to puppetry since the late 1970s as an animator, builder, and puppeteer. He is the founder of Deliciosa Royala (1981–1994), Román y Cía (1995–2001), Érase Producciones (2002–2004), and Muñecos Animados (2005–2015). In 2019, he founded the Asociación Cultural Muñecos Animados (2019–2025). He currently combines his own projects with collaborations with other companies and teaches animation and puppet manipulation at the Centro del Títere in Alcorcón.

He has extensive experience in all areas of theatrical and audiovisual creation and production with puppets. Characters such as Gomaespuma, Los Lunnis, 7 Pets, Los Patata, Rizo de Génesis, Avenue Q, Nena y Nene, and many others were born in his workshop.

He has worked as a director, producer, actor, manipulator, designer, builder, voice director, editor, and more. He trained partially in New York with Kermit Love, one of the creators of The Muppets, and in Berlin with Werner Kepler, creator of the makeup for Planet of the Apes; however, most of his knowledge comes from his own experimentation.

He has received awards at FETEN, the Mostra Internacional de Titelles de la Vall d’Albaida, the Fira de Titelles de Lleida, and a Goya Award for Best Special Effects (2003).
