ЛEШИЙ / LESHI, by Atresbandes (premiere)
A four-act theatre piece based on the reading of a work by Anton Chekhov.
The play is titled Леший. It was written, performed, and… failed. From the Latin quassare, to break. The play broke. The broken play was rejected by its own author, who decreed: “Let it never be published or performed again.”
Chekhov was approaching forty. He wrote this piece 136 years ago, with words, without images: cinema did not yet exist.
But if, like us, you do not speak Russian, Леший is not just a word—it is an image. And you, who do you see? Who? Yes, who.
A co-production of Atresbandes, the Fundació Joan Brossa – Centre de les Arts Lliures, and the IF Barcelona festival, with the support of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
Atresbandes was founded in 2011 from the artistic and personal meeting of Mònica Almirall, Miquel Segovia, and Albert Pérez Hidalgo in the academic environment of the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona. Influenced by a wide range of disciplines and references, the company is characterized by defending a laboratory theatre where the creative process is essential and where doubt, uncertainty, and the desire to question everything become its driving force.
